MUSIC OF THE SPHERES | When Music Meets Science

UZH Space and the Géza Anda Foundation cordially invite you to MUSIC OF THE SPHERES | When Music Meets Science, a special public event celebrating the intersection of music, philosophy, and astronomy. The event will feature a live piano performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations by pianist Julian Trevelyan, accompanied by stunning astrophysical images and simulations from researchers at the University of Zurich, alongside a unique reveal of the original planetary beginnings of Martin Buber's "I and Thou".

As music and cosmic visualizations unfold together, the audience will be invited on a journey through sound, space, thought, and the wonders of the universe.

Born in 1998, the British musician Julian Trevelyan was awarded Second Prize, the Audience Prize, and the Mozart Prize at the 15th Concours Géza Anda in Zurich in the summer of 2021. He had already won the prestigious Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition at the age of 16 and has received further awards at competitions such as the CFRPM – Concours-Festival for Contemporary Music in Paris, the Dudley International Piano Competition in Birmingham, the Dumortier Competition in Belgium, and the Kissinger PianoOlymp.

Julian is an alumnus of the Lieven International Piano Foundation and initially studied piano with Elizabeth Altman and Christopher Elton. Supported by Patrick Masure, he is currently studying at the École Normale Alfred Cortot in Paris with Rena Shereshevskaya. He has performed more than twenty piano concertos, including the original version of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23. In Moscow, he was the soloist in the Russian premiere of Lucas Debargue’s Concertino for Piano and Orchestra.

Alongside his performance career, Julian studied composition in Paris and serves as Composer in Residence with Ensemble Dynamique. In addition to his training as a pianist and composer, he studied Musicology at the University of Oxford and earned a degree in Geology. Julian is also first violinist in a string quartet, performs on historical instruments, and sings in a Mandarin-language a cappella choir. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking, and sports.

About the Géza Anda Foundation:
The Géza Anda Foundation was created in 1978 by Hortense Anda-Bührle (1926-2014) in memory of her husband, the Hungarian-Swiss pianist Géza Anda.

Its aim is to promote young, talented pianists in the musical spirit of Géza Anda. The Géza Anda-Foundation has held an international piano competition in Zurich every three years since 1979. The Concours Géza Anda is a unique, extraordinary institution among the countless competitions that exist on the international scene today – and not just because of its distinguished jury, which comprises outstanding members of the music world. The Concours Géza Anda goes beyond organising its prestigious final concert and awarding significant monetary prizes. The Géza Anda Foundation is committed to mentoring its winners for three years and also to providing them with concert engagements.

In addition, the Foundation engages in the support of young pianists by organising numerous other projects.
