Towards Computational Design of Rigidly Foldable Origami Patterns, Deployables and Structures

Abstract

Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, offers a compelling design language for foldable and reconfigurable structures, translating a flat sheet into shapes of arbitrary complexity. Yet despite the potential, origami-inspired engineering design remains largely confined to a small set of well-studied crease patterns, leaving much of origami's potential unexploited by researchers and design practitioners alike. In this talk, I present the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory's (EDAC) and my work in computational design of rigidly foldable origami structures, moving beyond known patterns toward a broader, algorithmically accessible design space. The algorithmic approach to designing origami-based deployable structures is especially promising for space applications, where compact stowage and subsequent deployment are critical design requirements. The talk will also take the opportunity to introduce other related work from EDAC.

Tino Stankovic

Dr. Tino Stankovic is a senior scientist and deputy head of the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. He is involved in teaching several courses at ETH Zurich in the area of engineering design. Current research interests include computational design of origami-adapted rigid-foldable structures and deployables, computational design of lattice structures, and application of machine learning to support engineering design. Tino Stankovic serves as a reviewer for many established scientific journals and conferences. He is a member of the Design Society.
