The recent approval of Reflect Orbital’s first demonstration satellite by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has sparked intense debate. Supporters see orbital mirrors as a promising technology with applications ranging from emergency response and search-and-rescue to solar energy on demand and agriculture. Critics warn of far-reaching consequences for astronomy, wildlife, human health, space traffic management, international space governance and the commercialization of the night sky. Meanwhile, newspaper articles and social media have amplified both excitement and concern, often blurring the line between established science and speculation.
In this article, researchers from a wide range of disciplines at the University of Zurich, members of UZH Space, including astrophysics, Earth observation, environmental and social science, law, ethics and theology, look at this controversial emerging space technology. What has been approved? What are the plausible opportunities, risks, and challenges? What questions remain unanswered?
